WingTsun

The core program. Practical self-protection built on structure, sensitivity and the centerline — plus the awareness and de-escalation work that keeps you out of it entirely.

Times and tuition

Adults train Thursday and Friday, 6:00–7:30 PM, and Saturday, 10:00–11:30 AM — three sessions a week at the Don Nash Community Center.

Tuition is $130 per month. New students can start with the $10 introductory course before committing to anything monthly. Private one-on-one training is available separately.

Who this is for

Adults who want to be able to protect themselves and are starting from wherever they currently are. No experience is assumed. No fitness standard has to be met first. We regularly start people who have never trained anything in their lives.

It suits people who work, who have families, and who need training that fits two evenings and a Saturday morning rather than a second job.

What you actually train

StructureThe stance, elbow position and body alignment that let a smaller person hold ground against a stronger one.
The centerlineOccupying your own line and taking his — the distance principle that makes the counter land first.
Chi sauSticking hands: live contact drilling that turns feel into reflex, so your arms answer pressure before you consciously process it.
Close-range workTrapping range — inside your reach, where real attacks begin and most styles run out of answers.
Awareness & de-escalationReading a situation, managing distance and leaving safely. The fight you avoid is the one you win outright.

Kicking range — longest

Legs out-reach arms, so this is the furthest anyone can touch you from. It also demands space, balance on one leg, and a clear line of sight.

You will usually see it coming, and almost no real assault opens here. Someone intending to hurt you closes the distance first — they do not announce themselves from across a car park.

Not where it starts

Punching range — long

Hands can reach. This is boxing range, and it is where most people picture a fight happening, because it is where fights on television happen.

It still requires a gap. If you have that gap, your best option is usually to leave through it rather than to trade shots with a stranger whose skill you cannot assess.

Not where it starts

Trapping range — close

Inside punching range, forearms and elbows in contact. Close enough to feel what the other person is doing rather than watch for it.

This is where real assaults actually begin — grabbed, shoved, backed against something, already inside your reach before you registered a threat. It is also the range most systems have the fewest answers for, because you cannot see clearly and there is no room to wind up. WingTsun was engineered for precisely this band, which is why chi sau trains touch instead of sight.

Where WingTsun lives

Grappling range — closest

Body to body. Clinch, throws, and the ground. A deep and legitimate skill set with its own arts built entirely around it.

Our aim is to resolve the situation before it arrives here. Not because grappling does not work — it plainly does — but because going to the ground on concrete, or with more than one person present, removes the option of leaving.

“I studied at a previous Wing Chun class for maybe three months and there were so many different issues — angles, positioning, sometimes whole concepts. Shifu Willis will not have you move forward before getting step one correct.”

On sparring

Nobody spars you on your first class. Pressure is added gradually, once structure and control are there to handle it. Getting beaten up on day one teaches nothing except not to come back.

“He's a great teacher and is enthusiastic about martial arts. He really does care about his students as well. And be prepared to leave sore after a good workout.”

What comes with it

Fitness and conditioning are not a separate class you sign up for — strength, stamina and mobility come out of the footwork and drilling themselves. The same is true of the health and longevity side: the forms are a practice you keep for decades.

Wondering whether any of this holds up under real pressure? Read the honest answer. New to the art? Read what WingTsun is first. If you are coming to this specifically for personal safety, there is a page on why the art suits people giving away size and strength.
